Remove HakunaMatata

HakunaMatata is a ransomware, in other words, a program that crypts your files in hope that you’ll pay a ransom to get them all back. This programs goes mainly after personal files, prioritizing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, as well as any photos or videos present on your computer.

As you can see in the screenshot shown above, HakunaMatata adds an extension to all crypted files (.HakunaMatata) and will also add to every folder a file with instructions to pay the ransom.

To decrypt your files you must have a key that in theory you’ll get once you had completed the asked payment. However, you won’t have any sort of accurate guarantee that the cybercriminal hiding behind HakunaMatata will actually give you the needed key once they get your money. They could of course give to you but make sure the virus stays installed on your computer, therefore your files can be crypted again and you’ll be right on the start all over again. The most important and urgent action to take on, is to remove HakunaMatata before you infect any computers on your network. Tools we recommend in our guide can help you with that task. Afterwards you’re presented with two options, either keep your files in an external hard drive hoping that someone will get a solution eventually, or try to recover them from a Windows backup (there’s a section about ShadowExplorer on the guide).
